Kyiv in English: Kyiv or Kiev

In short: write Kyiv. Kiev is not a second acceptable option, it is obsolete: international gazetteers removed it back in 2019. For a form, a ticket or a CV, Kyiv is the only current spelling

The doubt is understandable, though. Kiev still turns up on tickets, in menus and in old documents, and not every one of those is a mistake. Below is where the old form legitimately survives and where it is due for replacement.

What changed in 2019

On 2 October 2018 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine launched #CorrectUA, campaigning under the slogan KyivNotKiev and addressing foreign media and government bodies. The core argument was linguistic rather than political: English was routing the capital’s name through a third language although it had a direct rule for Ukrainian.

The decision of the United States Board on Geographic Names was announced on 13 June 2019: Kiev was struck from the list of conventional forms, leaving Kyiv as the sole spelling, and the change took effect in the geographic names database on 17 June. Kyiv had in fact been approved as early as October 2006, but US government documents were then still permitted to write Kiev where context required it. That proviso is what 2019 removed. International flight databases and major news agencies, Associated Press among them, followed.

In short: Kyiv is not a new form but the one Ukrainian rules produced all along. What changed in 2019 was English-language practice, not the name

Where Kiev still appears

WhereWhyWhat to do
The airport code IEVthe letter code for Zhuliany was built on the old spelling and does not move with the nameleave it alone, it is a technical identifier
Legacy maps and databasesrecords entered before 2019 and never refreshedwrite Kyiv in anything new
Chicken Kiev on a menuthe dish name settled independently of the city namesome restaurants have moved to Chicken Kyiv; both read clearly
Kievan Rus in history writingthe term became fixed in English-language historiographycurrent publications increasingly print Kyivan Rus

The rule of thumb is simple: if you mean the city as it is today, write Kyiv. If you are handling a fixed term or a technical code, leave it, because it has stopped being the name of the capital and become a unit of its own.

How the rules produce Kyiv

The Ukrainian letter к is rendered k, и becomes y, ї inside a word becomes i, and в becomes v. Put them together and Kyiv falls out, with no exception invented for the capital. The same mechanics are set out in Resolution No. 55 of the Cabinet of Ministers, which governs passports, maps and signage.

Kiev arises differently: it renders the Russian Киев, where е yields e. The two forms differ not in transcription or ease of pronunciation but in which language the original was taken from.

How to say it

English dictionaries give a pronunciation close to two syllables, roughly KEE-yiv. The older spelling Kiev drags its own KEE-ev along with it, which is why both are still heard on air. In writing this changes nothing, but if you are naming the city aloud in an interview or on a call, follow the two-syllable version.

Kyiv Oblast in English

Kyiv Oblast appears in official translations, Kyiv Region in journalism and on company websites. Kyivska is not used in English text at all: English does not take the adjectival form for regional names.

Where to go next

A city name is rarely needed on its own; it usually sits in a form beside an address. The line order and the abbreviations are collected in the guide to a Ukrainian address in English. The country’s second city follows exactly the same logic: how Kharkiv is spelled in English.

When every other word in an English form has to be checked separately, place names are no longer the problem. The online level test will show where the gap sits, and our general English programme is built to close it.

Questions about spelling the capital

Kyiv or Kiev: which should I write today? Kyiv. It renders the Ukrainian name under the official rules, and since 2019 it is what international gazetteers, airlines and most English-language media use. Kiev reproduces the Russian form and survives mainly in old records
Why did Kiev last so long in English? The spelling reached English maps and reference books through Russian in the Soviet period and settled into databases, flight schedules and dish names. Changing entries like those took a deliberate decision rather than natural drift
What is the English for Kyivska oblast? Kyiv Oblast in official texts and Kyiv Region in less formal writing. The city and the region differ only in the second word; the name itself is spelled identically
