Stand-up
People translate their status word for word from their first language, and it drags on for a minute. We practise a short update and a natural I’m still on it for a task that isn’t closed yet
Code review
A literal you must fix this sounds like an order, even when the author only meant to suggest. English-speaking teams soften it: what if we… A minor remark is flagged with the word nit
Bug report
For QA, what matters is that the developer reproduces the bug first time. So you start with the steps to reproduce. Then, separately, what should have happened (expected result) and what actually happened (actual result)
Client call
The costliest mistake is a polite ‘yes’ to a requirement you didn’t quite catch. A quick recap at the end of the call saves you: ‘Just to confirm, the deadline is Friday’
Documentation
In specs, every word counts. Must means a mandatory requirement. Should is a recommendation you skip only with good reason. Read must as ‘nice to have’, and the work gets sent back

Does English affect pay in IT?
Yes, for experienced developers. DOU’s winter 2026 survey of Ukrainian developers found that from mid-level up, better English can mean higher pay. For juniors it makes little difference so far
What level do I need for the English for IT course?
We recommend Pre-Intermediate and above. If you read documentation in English but do not yet speak confidently, this course is for you
Do you prepare for tech interviews in English?
Yes. We work through technical questions, talking about your projects and self-presentation. If the interview is already scheduled, there is a separate course: focused interview preparation
I am only moving into IT. Will the course suit me?
Yes. We start with technical vocabulary and reading documentation: you will need that from your first day on the team. We practise the interview in English separately, when it gets closer
