Nineteen of the thirty tasks are gap-fills. What decides the score is not how many words you know but your eye for the form the sentence demands
The unified entrance exam (EVI) is a state entrance test for applicants to master’s programmes and to the third level of higher education. The result counts towards your admission ranking together with other scores, and the exam itself is taken on a computer at a testing centre.
It applies to applicants regardless of speciality, mode of study or source of funding. Some fields additionally sit a unified professional entrance test, but that is a subject paper rather than a language one. Current conditions are published by the Ukrainian Centre for Educational Quality Assessment.
The EVI has two blocks, and they test different things:
Together the two blocks take about two hours, of which roughly 45 minutes fall to the language part. You divide the time yourself, so the habit of fitting inside that window counts for as much as vocabulary does.
The block holds 30 tasks in three forms:
So two things are assessed: reading comprehension and command of language structures. There is no speaking, no listening and no writing paper at all, which means preparation aimed at «getting talking» earns no marks here. The test description is updated each year on the UCEQA page.
Each correct answer is worth one test mark, so the language block is out of 30 marks. The raw result is then converted to a scale of 100–200, and that figure goes into the admission formula.
The weight of that score is set nationally: the admission procedure gives the EVI foreign language score a coefficient of 0.2. Each university sets its own minimum ranking score for each programme in its admission rules. That is why 160 can mean entirely different chances on two neighbouring programmes. Read your own faculty’s requirements, not averages from a forum.
The exam syllabus targets levels B1–B2: it sets a lexical minimum of 2,500 units and grammar that fits inside a normal Intermediate course. Nothing exotic is tested, but every topic on the list is live.
If you are holding close to B1, most of the work goes into format and speed. From a lower level, the base comes first and preparation runs longer. Exactly how much longer is what the first timed mock test shows.
Registration for the EVI is handled by university admission committees in spring, in two periods. The main testing session falls in summer, an additional one at the end of summer. Results appear in your personal account within a few weeks.
Specific dates are approved by a separate order each year. Check the schedule on testportal.gov.ua before submitting documents.
It is not something to count on: an international certificate does not by itself exempt you from the EVI. For doctoral admission, the Ministry of Education and Science has separately suspended the recognition of language certificates from foreign providers. So the EVI result is required there too.

These are two different doors into a university. The NMT (National Multi-Subject Test) is for bachelor’s admission. English can be chosen as the fourth subject. It has 32 questions, a different mix of tasks and roughly 60 minutes as a guide. The EVI is taken after a bachelor’s degree for master’s admission, and the language block is compulsory.
The preparation programmes are not interchangeable: different texts, a different weight of grammar, a different pace. If you are applying straight after school, what you need is NMT English preparation rather than this course.
We have been teaching since 2005, and we prepare for the EVI one-to-one only. In a group, the pace would follow someone else’s mock result, not yours. The teacher sees your particular mistakes in the gap-fill rather than a class average, and builds the next lesson around them.
We do not teach the general learning competence test: it is logic and numbers, with no language in it. The language block, however, we cover in full, with all the grammar of the syllabus. If grammar needs a lot of work, we have a separate English grammar course.
