The national multi-subject test (NMT) is the entrance exam for bachelor’s programmes in Ukraine. In 2026 it covered four subjects: Ukrainian language, mathematics, History of Ukraine and one of your choice. English is one of the optional subjects, alongside Spanish, German and French.
The test runs in two stages of 120 minutes, 240 in total. The first stage covers Ukrainian language and mathematics, the second History of Ukraine and your chosen subject, with a 20-minute break between them. You divide the time inside a stage yourself and can switch freely between its two subjects, so 60 minutes for English is a benchmark rather than a separate timer: time saved on your stronger subject can go to the weaker one. Within a stage you can return to either subject as often as you like, but never after the stage has ended. The foreign language block has a logic of its own, and that is what is worth drilling in advance. The block holds 32 questions with roughly 60 minutes to answer them. They are grouped into six tasks across two parts, reading and use of English. There are three task types:
Half the block is gap-fill, and that is the part where grammar decides the answer rather than a guess. There is no listening and no writing paper, so all preparation goes into reading, vocabulary and grammar. A detailed description of the block is available on the UCEQA page.

The ZNO foreign language exam is no longer held; the NMT replaced it in 2022. Most preparation material online is still the older kind, so candidates often revise for a test they will not sit. The difference is not cosmetic.

Older ZNO workbooks and practice tests are still useful for reading, vocabulary and grammar, because the content of both tests comes from the same foreign languages syllabus. The listening and writing exercises in them, however, are now dead weight: the NMT has neither, and hours spent on essays will not lift the score.
The second change bites harder than the list of parts. The ZNO gave 150 minutes for 59 tasks, about two and a half minutes each. The NMT gives roughly 60 minutes for 32 questions, under two. That is why preparing for the NMT is above all work on pace: the test merely revisits the school syllabus, while speed has to be built separately.
Each question is worth 0 or 1 mark, so the block is out of 32 test marks. The result is then converted to a scale of 100 to 200, and that is the figure used in the admission formula.
The subject tests contain no open-ended tasks with extended answers, so you see your raw score immediately after finishing. Convenient, yes, but it also means that pacing you failed to practise cannot be repaired afterwards.
The level benchmark for the foreign language block is B1, and the content follows the school foreign languages syllabus. If you are already close to B1, the work is mostly about format and pace, which usually means a few months of regular lessons. From a lower level, the base comes first and it takes longer.
The diagnostic gives the exact answer: a mock block shows how many questions you get right and how many minutes you spend on them. From there the plan is built backwards from your session date.
Candidates who have left the country sit the test at temporary examination centres abroad. In 2026 such centres operated in more than 30 countries, registration ran from 5 March to 2 April, the venue could be changed until 7 April, and there were two sessions, the main one and an additional one.
Next year’s subject list and dates have not been finalised, so we quote no figures for 2027. The pattern is simple: registration usually in spring, sessions in summer, with the official schedule published on testportal.gov.ua. Preparation online does not depend on the country you are in.
After the diagnostic you get a concrete picture: how many questions of the block you answered correctly, which topics are failing and how many lessons remain before the session.
From there, progress shows in the mock runs: they measure both the number of mistakes and the pace. That is the most honest readiness indicator there is, because pace is what eats marks in the final minutes.
These are exams for different stages. The NMT is taken to enter a bachelor’s programme after school, and English there is one of the optional subjects. The EVI, the unified entrance exam, is taken to enter a master’s programme, and it tests English as a paper in its own right: 30 tasks in about 45 minutes.
