Four sections, about 90 minutes of tasks, no breaks. With the directions, ETS advises allowing roughly two hours. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures academic English and is run by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Reading and Listening are adaptive: later tasks depend on your answers. So their length varies slightly.
Do not leave any section blank. One section with no answers, and the whole test goes unscored.
You can sit it at a test centre or at home (TOEFL iBT Home Edition) with a live human proctor. The test and marking are identical. Only the place differs. The current section breakdown is published on the official ETS page.
Since 21 January 2026 ETS has reported scores on a 1 to 6 scale in half-point steps. Each score matches a level from A1 to C2. You receive four section scores and an overall score. The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. An average of 5.25 gives 5.5.
Until January 2028 the report also shows a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale. That gives institutions time to update their requirements. So you will see both scales at universities for some time yet.
TOEFL has no pass mark. Each institution sets its own. Look for it on your programme’s admissions page.

Your programme still asks for 100 on the old scale? ETS advises institutions to replace that requirement with 5, a requirement of 90 with 4.5, and 80 with 4. Section minimums convert separately. 24 out of 30 in Reading gives 5, but in Speaking only 4.5. ETS publishes the full tables for every section on its page for institutions.
The easiest way to register is online, in your ETS account. In most countries you can also book by phone through the local contact centre.
You can reschedule or cancel in the same account. The fee, documents and rescheduling rules depend on your country. Check them on the ETS registration page before you pay.
How long it takes depends on your starting level and your institution’s bar. From Upper-Intermediate it usually takes three to four months. From Intermediate it is closer to six. Your first lesson, a diagnostic in exam format, shows exactly how far you have to go. Then we plan around your test date.
Many universities in the US, Canada and other countries accept both IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT. Check your programme’s requirements first. Then choose by format.
